Sway

Ammunition packed hips grove to hand beaten leather.

Collarbone made for wishing and bangs full of feather.

Beet stained patterns meet glowing skin.

Lustful gazes attract through magnetism of sin.

Plum lips licked as sweat fountains fall.

Clanking bangles hula-hooping both wrists so small.

Aged earlobes droop above rhythmic shoulders.

Lead knees quickly rise, lifting feet that can’t hold her.

This woman is free, body becoming beat,

A vision of freedom that makes him weak.

Dilations of desire draw him to move closer

Calloused hands clap in tune as onlookers toast her

Acoustic soles slap wooden planks below

Thick neck snaking to the beat of her flow

Crisp linens crave wrinkling and hard leather rubs

Glisten of the gold bracelets pass through unbutton cuffs

Rough skin before shaving accent lips of a smile

As trunk thighs float the floor in unique style.

This man sees an angel, determined to join her

Knowing tonight would begin their life of dance with each other

Haitian Symbol of Justice
Photograph taken by Robin Baldwin in the office of the Minister of Justice and Public Security Judge McEdume Kenson, June 2009

Haitian Jistis (“Justice”) is not only blind, but the balance between right and wrong weighs on her head.
Tell Roman-derived Lady Justice, who holds her scale in her hands, to try that and see how much her followers’ immorality has cost humankind. And that’s why Westerners like to place her scale down and away from eye-level: they can leave proper judgment and moral consequences to someone else.

How I want to live…

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon:
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
where there is sadness, joy
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
